Richmond resident Grace Lee is among hundreds of Canadian student finalists competing in the 2025 Canada-wide Science Fair from June 1 to 6.

Three students from Richmond will be competing among nearly 400 students in the national science fair next week.

R.C. Palmer student Riya Dua and residents Grace Lee, studying at York House, and Ryan Huang, studying at Southpointe Academy, are among 390 finalists across the country who will showcase their award-winning STEM projects at the Canada-wide Science Fair.

Dua's project created a new device that breaks down plastic and generates electricity at the same time, while Lee's project introduces a new way to fight harmful bacteria by creating tiny particles that act like natural enzymes.

Meanwhile, Huang's project looks at how a car driving over a speed bump can generate electricity to help power things like street lights.

The national science fair this year will take place from June 1 to 6 in Fredericton, N.B., where students in grades 7 to 12 will be competing for nearly $1.3 million in awards, scholarships and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Projects will be judged from June 2 to 3, followed by a STEM Expo from June 5 to 6, featuring more than 50 interactive exhibits from universities, government agencies, companies, museums, and STEM organizations.

Reni Barlow, executive director at Youth Science Canada, describes the Canada-wide Science Fair as a "celebration of youth innovation."

“The Canada-wide Science Fair offers a unique platform for Canada’s brightest young minds to share their discoveries and innovative solutions to real-world challenges while connecting with peers who share their passion for STEM," said Barlow.

An awards ceremony will be held on June 5, where winners will receive recognition for their achievements.
